
If you have an understanding about lathing, then you should have no problem in understanding the concept of 3D Revolve in illustrator.
Use the Pen tool and draw a design.

Select the item and open the Effect and pick 3D. Now choose Revolve.

Check Preview to see the action live.

This is the immediate result of applying Revolve in the default state.

Make some adjustment to the Angle.

Instead of fully revolving the object, reduce it's size to 73%.


Create a semi half circle. Open Revolve.

Change Surface to No Shading to speed up the process.

Set the Angle to 270 degrees. We now have an open piece.

Use the same method to draw this watermelon.

Apply the same Revolve settings. Have some fun with Revolve!
